2012 M-velope Screenwall

International Competition Entry

Project Team: Christina Doumpioti, Pavel Hladik, Jeffrey P. Turko

Engineering Consultants: Arup London, Giulio Antonutto, Luca Dellatorre

The competition brief asked for an exploration of building facades as a 3dimensional front. The site is the street front of the Milavec Hakimi Gallery at 51 Cooper Square – The New Cooper Union building – in New York City. Proposed structures could be experimental installations positioned outside of the gallery and / or provide the gallery with an outdoor exhibition space

The design of the M-Velope screenwall deploys a structural metal mesh in combination with textile membranes to create a layered deep spaces with differently sized spatial pockets that can be inhabited by spectators or exhibits. It also serves to frame specific views from the exterior to the interior and vice versa, and limits direct solar exposure of the exhibition space and exhibits.
